When it comes to choosing the perfect ring, size matters.
A ring that’s too tight will feel uncomfortable, while one that’s too loose risks slipping off and getting lost. Whether you’re shopping for yourself or planning a surprise for someone special, knowing the right ring size makes all the difference.

The good news? Measuring your ring size at home is simple, inexpensive, and only takes a few minutes. Here’s everything you need to know!

We do recommend getting your ring size checked by a jeweler as they have the tools and experience to be able to accurately measure your ring size and give you advice.

What You’ll Need

Many guides recommend using paper or string to help you find out your ring size but due to their flexibility, they can lead to you making mistakes (which is something you want to avoid!), which is why we recommend buying a ring size measurer.

They look like belts for your finger but we think these are better for measuring ring sizes because:

Step-by-Step: How to Measure Your Ring Size

Ready? Let’s do this.

  1. Make the ring sizer into a ring shape – any size will do as you just need to be able to slide it on your finger
  2. Slide the sizer down to where the ring is going to sit – this is usually the base of your finger
  3. Adjust the slider – tighten the slider till it fits snugly but still feels comfortable — you want it to feel secure but not tight enough to dig into your skin
  4. Try and remove the slider – with it still on the size that feels comfortable, try and slide it over your knuckle. If it comes off, then you can move on to the next step, if not, you will need to adjust the sizer until you can remove it

If there is a notable difference between the size that feels comfortable on your finger and the one that fits over your knuckle, you may need some modifications to your ring so that you can wear it comfortably as you don’t want it getting stuck on your finger.

But that isn’t all, there are some additional things you need to consider/do:

What About If You Are Buying For Someone Else?

For engagement rings and gifts, trying to guess someone’s ring size is very challenging but there are some things you can do to try and find out:

  1. Check an existing ring – if they already wear a ring on that finger, you can ‘borrow’ it and take it to a jeweler to get them to check the size
  2. Get friends and family to help – they might be able to help you find out by getting them to get the person you are buying the ring for the try on different rings until they find one that fits

But do be prepared to have the ring you buy resized or if it is for an engagement ring, consider a proposal ring, which is a cheap ring to propose with and then have the real one sized correctly with the help of your partner.
